In A Nutshell | January 24, 2014

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
We had a wonderful weekend of food and fellowship last week, concluding with our “Casting Our Congregational Vision” luncheon after worship. At that time I shared with the congregation several of my goals, including increasing our worship attendance to 150 before the bishop appoints me to another congregation. Yes, I realize that number represents a 100% increase in our current attendance, but I believe it is attainable if we continue to focus on our mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
This Sunday the pastors in our compass group are exchanging pulpits. The Oak Chapel UMC congregation will have the pleasure of welcoming the Rev. Tami Toothman-Shoup, pastor at Sterling UMC. Her message titled “Why We Follow” is based on Matthew 4: 12 – 23. I will be preaching on that same text at the New Pittsburg United Methodist Church.
Below you will find announcements and other important information about upcoming events. Please review and mark your calendars accordingly.
Hospitality Corner
April Aten is coordinating our “hospitality corner,” offering coffee and breakfast treats (donut holes, muffins, etc.) in our Narthex on Sunday mornings beginning at 9:00am. If you are willing to bring treats and/or set up on Sunday mornings, please indicate your willingness on the attendance sheet in your Sunday bulletin or call April at 330-234-1940. We appreciate your assistance in providing a welcoming environment for our visitors and church family.
Nursery Care
Terra Aten is the main leader in our church nursery. Thank you to all who volunteered to assist her. Pam Domer mailed letters with the rotation schedule this week. This Sunday’s nursery assistants are Joanne and Kate Jolliff. Next week’s (Sunday, February 2) assistants are Mark and Patti Ritchey.
Vacation Bible School Preview and Luncheon
The dates for this year’s Vacation Bible School are July 14 – 18 from 5:30 – 8:30pm. The theme is “Jungle Safari: Where Kids Explore the Nature of God.” In conjunction with our Fellowship Luncheon after worship on Sunday, February 16, we will share a preview of the materials. Come discover how you might help with VBS this year!
Sunday School Explosion
On Sunday, February 23 we will host a Sunday School Explosion. The day will begin with a hot breakfast served in Fellowship Hall at 8:30am. Entertainment during the breakfast hour includes “Science Experiments with Pastor Robin.” There will also be games and prizes. Invite someone new to join you for breakfast and Sunday School that day. It is sure to be a blast!
District Superintendent News
As many already know, our District Superintendent, the Rev. Dr. Valerie Stultz, is retiring this June. We have appreciated her ministry and leadership on our district and wish her well in her retirement. We will have an opportunity to personally thank her for her leadership when she worships with us on Sunday, March 16.
Bishop John Hopkins intends to appoint the Rev. Edward P. Peterson to the Canal District, effective July 1. Rev. Peterson has served the Lake Brady and Middlefield United Methodist Churches. Prior to entering the ministry, he worked as an engineer for commercial heating and air conditioning companies in Cleveland and Akron.

In A Nutshell | December 20, 2013

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
This morning as I’ve been putting the finishing touches on some of my Christmas gifts, I’ve been thinking of and praying for our community of faith – praying that each one of us would not only feel, but truly know the hope, peace, joy and love that comes from the Christ Child this Christmas. These are Christmas gifts that can’t be measured … or wrapped … or broken. This Sunday we will conclude our Advent sermon series “Christmas Gifts That Won’t Break,” based on James Moore’s book. My message, titled, “The Gift of Love,” is based on Luke 2: 15 – 20. I hope you will join us for this Fourth Sunday of Advent service.
Then be sure to return to the church on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 as the choir presents its “Together for Christmas” cantata. A blend of refreshing new music, beloved carols and traditional melodies, with simple narration, this presentation will draw all listeners into the story of the nativity and nurture the congregation toward hope, peace, joy and love. There will be a cookie reception in Fellowship Hall after the program. We hope you will join us and bring a friend.
Christmas Eve
Our Christmas Eve Candlelight Worship will include a brief service of lessons and carols with special music, a short meditation and Holy Communion. Join us on Tuesday, December 24 at 7:00pm as we celebrate the birth of the Christ child.
Office Hours
Though I will be in the office periodically during the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day, I will not have set office hours. However, I am available for appointments and emergencies. Please call me on my cell at 330-234-7717.
Colors of Christmas
We continue our annual Oak Chapel tradition of the “Colors of Christmas.” Members are encouraged to wear something reflecting each week’s color.
Sunday, 12/22 – Blue (signifying eternity)
Tuesday, 12/24 – (Christmas Eve) – White (signifying purity)
Sunday, 12/29 – Gold (signifying riches)
Card Showers
On January 2, Clayton “Kate” and Joanne Jolliff will celebrate their 65th Anniversary. In lieu of a party this year, they will gather with their immediate family for a celebration. If you would like to wish them well on this special occasion, their address is 8702 W. Old Lincoln Way, Wooster, OH 44691.
Also, Bob Olds (Cheryl Rastetter’s Dad) will celebrate his 90th birthday on January 14. His address 1501 North 16th Avenue, Lakeworth, FL 33460.
Epiphany
Epiphany, also known as “Three Kings Day” and “Twelfth Day,” is a Christian holiday commemorated on January 6. It falls on the twelfth day after Christmas, and for some denominations signals the conclusion of the twelve days of the Christmas season. The word epiphany means “manifestation” or “revelation” and is commonly linked in Western Christianity with the visit of the wise men or Magi to the Christ child. We will celebrate this occasion with Communion on Sunday, January 5.
Doing Online Christmas Shopping?
Your online shopping could benefit Oak Chapel. The United Methodist Church, in partnership with some of the largest online retailers, has built a shopping tool that provides a cash benefit for local churches when you purchase through the UMCmarket — items you’d probably be buying anyway. The retailer does not markup the price — you still pay what you’d pay as you did before. How does it work? Simply create an account at UMCMarket.org and designate Oak Chapel as the recipient of the proceeds. Oak Chapel will receive 1 – 5% of your purchase from online stores and travel sites. Check it out. Please see Pastor Robin if you have any questions.
District Leadership Training – Save the Date!
The annual Canal District Leadership Training Event will be Saturday, January 25 at Wooster UMC. Let’s take advantage of training offered right in our backyard. The sessions will address leadership of various committees needed to equip the saints for the work of ministry. Anyone may attend. All church leaders should attend.

In A Nutshell | December 13, 2013

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
How did it get to be the middle of December already? Where has the month gone? I know many of you are busily preparing for Christmas – shopping, wrapping gifts, making cookies, getting ready for family celebrations, etc. This season of Advent is indeed one of preparation. In the midst of the flurry of activity, though, I encourage you to carve out some time to not only be physically prepared for Christmas, but to also be spiritually prepared to receive the greatest gift of all – Jesus Christ. Why not worship with us this Sunday as we continue our series on “Christmas gifts that won’t break”? This week my sermon is titled “The Gift of Joy,” based on Matthew 1: 25 – 28. After worship we will gather for our traditional 3rd Sunday Fellowship Luncheon. Then at 1:00 we will go Christmas caroling to some of our homebound members. I hope you will join us for some or all of these festivities on Sunday as we prepare our hearts for the coming of Jesus Christ.
Last Saturday, I hosted our first “drive-thru” prayer station. Though only one person came through, it was very meaningful. We will continue the “drive-thru”prayer station tomorrow – December 14 – and next Saturday, December 21 from 10am – Noon. If you know someone who could use a little encouragement this season, tell ‘em to drive by! We want our community to know we care about them.
Card Showers
Today (December 13) is Dorothy McCloud’s 94thBirthday. When you see her in church on Sunday, be sure to wish her well. If you’d like to send her a card – albeit a bit belated – her address is The Oaks at Shady Lawn, 15028 E. Lincoln Way, Dalton, OH 44618.

New Adult Sunday School Series
This Sunday the Stewards of Faith Sunday School class will begin a new series based on the movie Flywheel. This movie, produced by the makers of Fireproofand Courageous, is about a dishonest used cars salesman who decides to become the salesman that God wants him to be –with surprising results. The class will spend the first four weeks of the study watching the movie with discussion of the characters. Beginning in January there will be eight sessions of Bible study based on various movie clips. The Stewards of Faith class meets in Fellowship Hall at 9:30am and they welcome all youth and adults to join them.
Wayne County Choral Union Concert
The Wayne County Choral Union will present its annual Christmas concert on Tuesday, December 17 at 7:00pm at Wooster United Methodist Church. It will be a delightful program including classic, traditional and newer music, as well as a carol sing-a-long.
Christmas Cantata –Together for Christmas
The choir will present a cantata titled “Together for Christmas” on Sunday, December 22 at 3:00pm. This musical presentation will explore the importance of the gathering of the family of God during the Christmas season, both emotionally and spiritually. A blend of refreshing new music, beloved carols and traditional melodies, with simple narration, this presentation will draw all listeners into the story of the nativity and nurture the congregation toward hope, peace, joy and love. This is a great non-threatening opportunity to invite your friends and neighbors to experience the hope of Jesus Christ during this Christmas season. Please plan now to join us!
Christmas Eve
Our Christmas Eve Candlelight Worship will include a brief service of lessons and carols, a short meditation and Holy Communion. Join us on Tuesday, December 24 at 7:00pm as we celebrate the birth of the Christ child.

In A Nutshell | December 6, 2013

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,

The Mountain Vision mission team is now safely on its way to Valley Head, WV. We are grateful for the “non-weather” we are currently experiencing in Wooster and pray that it will remain clear for their journey. I am grateful for the many youth and adults at Oak Chapel who share their faith through hands-on activities like this. Please pray for our team of nine traveling this weekend and for the children and families in Valley Head that they all might see the light of Christ reflected in each other.
Most have likely heard by now of the death of Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest peacemakers of our time. The timing of his death seems rather providential as we prepare for the second Sunday of Advent, the Sunday of Peace. My message, titled “The Gift of Peace,” is based on Isaiah 11: 1 – 10 and Luke 2: 8 – 14. I hope to see you in worship on Sunday as we continue to await the coming of the Prince of Peace.
I would also like to personally invite each of you to the parsonage open house on Sunday afternoon from 3:00 – 7:00pm. I am grateful for the love of our congregation and that you provide me with a beautiful home in our community. Please join me for a time of fellowship and treats.
United Methodist Men’s Trip to Football Hall of Fame
It’s not too late to join the United Methodist Men on their trip to the Football Hall of Fame tomorrow – Saturday, December 7. They are meeting in the parking lot at 9am and will stop to have a yummy breakfast at Das Dutch Kitchen in Dalton along the way. For more information, please call Kim Domer at 330-749-3461 or Bill Braucher at 330-201-1353.
Drive-Thru Prayers
In an effort to share the love of God and build relationships with the people of our community, Pastor Robin will host a “drive-thru” prayer station in the church parking lot tomorrow, Saturday, December 7, and for the next two Satrudays from 10am – Noon.  In the midst of the hustle and bustle of the season, we will offer the peace of Christ and a listening ear. Patrons may pull into the parking lot, share the concerns on their hearts, Pastor Robin will pray with them and then send them on their way with what we pray is a renewed sense of hope and peace. If you know someone who could use a little encouragement this season, tell ‘em to drive by! We want our community to know we care about them.
Colors of Christmas
We continue our annual Oak Chapel tradition of the “Colors of Christmas.” Members are encouraged to wear something reflecting each week’s color.

In A Nutshell | November 29, 2013

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
Happy Day After Thanksgiving!  We have much for which to be thankful and I trust that each of you took a few moments yesterday to offer praise and thanksgiving to God for the ways in which He is at work in our lives.
The liturgical season of Advent begins this Sunday. Advent marks the beginning of the church year and during this time we prepare for the birth of our Savior. During this season I will be offering a sermon series “Christmas Gifts That Won’t Break,” based on a study written by James W. Moore. Each week as we light the candles on our Advent wreath, we will reflect on the unbreakable gifts that God has given us: hope, peace, joy and love; and we will remember God’s greatest gift who comes to us as a baby and leads us through all the days of our lives. This week’s focus is Hope, based on Matthew 1: 18 – 21. We will also celebrate of the Hope of Jesus Christ through the Sacrament of Communion.
Come early on Sunday for our traditional Advent breakfast, hosted by the Kingdom Seekers class, beginning at 8:30am in Fellowship Hall.
Consider coming back to church on Sunday afternoon for our Blue Christmas service. Many in our faith community and the community at large are grieving this year and may be approaching this season with some dread. Our Blue Christmas service acknowledges that pain and sadness, but also encourages people to move toward hope. The service will begin at 4:00pm and will last approximately 45 minutes.
Colors of Christmas
This Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent and we will begin our annual Oak Chapel tradition of the “Colors of Christmas.” Members are encouraged to wear something reflecting each week’s color.
Sunday, December 1 – Green (signifying life)
Sunday, December 8 – Purple (signifying royalty)
Sunday, December 15 – Red (signifying sacrifice)
Sunday, December 22 – Blue (signifying eternity)
Tuesday, December 24 – (Christmas Eve)– White (signifying purity)
Sunday, December 29 – Gold (signifying riches)
Mountain Vision Christmas Party
Our Outreach Committee, the youth group and others will be traveling to Valley Head, WV on Friday, December 6 in preparation for a Christmas party there on Saturday, December 7. They will leave at Noon on Friday and return around 10pm on Saturday. If you would like to go on this overnight mission trip, please see Pam Domer. Also, if you committed to purchase a gift to be given to a child at the Mountain Vision Christmas party, please bring your wrapped package (with yellow form attached) to worship this Sunday, December 1.  During worship we will have a blessing of the blankets and gifts, and a prayer for those traveling and participating in this mission project.
Drive-Thru Prayers
In an effort to share the love of God and build relationships with the people of our community, Pastor Robin will host a “drive-thru” prayer station in the church parking lot for the first three Saturdays in December (12/7, 12/14 and 12/21) from 10am – Noon.  In the midst of the hustle and bustle of the season, we will offer the peace of Christ and a listening ear. Patrons may pull into the parking lot, share the concerns on their hearts, Pastor Robin will pray with them and then send them on their way with what we pray is a renewed sense of hope and peace. If you are willing to help with this outreach endeavor, please let Pastor Robin know. We want our community to know we care about them.

In A Nutshell | November 22, 2013

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,

The students and leaders of the youth group and I had a fun, enjoyable time at the Project 13:35 conference in Columbus last weekend. I appreciate the value the Oak Chapel congregation places on the youth in our church and am grateful for the time spent with them. I look forward to being in worship with all of you again this Sunday as we celebrate Thanksgiving and the Reign of Christ. My sermon, based on Colossians 1: 9 – 20, is titled “Super Glue.” I hope to see you there!
World Thank Offering
During worship this Sunday, we will celebrate World Thank Offering. Last year on World Thank Offering Sunday we encouraged you to start a Gratitude Box and put in coins each time you were thankful for some aspect of your life.  November 24 is the day to bring those coins forward. (Our United Methodist Women’s Treasurer would be grateful if you’d convert those coins to paper – either dollar bills or a check!) Through Thank Offering contributions mission projects are supported in all 50 states and in almost 100 countries. When we have an attitude of gratitude, life is better for all of us.
Church Conference
Our annual Church Conference is Sunday at Smithville UMC at 4:00pm. Why not come and learn more about the ministry and workings of our church and the other churches in our compass group. At Sunday’s session Oak Chapel will highlight its ministry with Mountain Vision. Everyone is welcome and all church leaders are expected.
Decorating the Sanctuary for Advent and Christmas
Preparing our beautiful sanctuary for the Advent and Christmas seasons is one way to set our hearts and put us in the right spirit for this sacred season. You are cordially invited to a festive decorating party with music and snacks tomorrow, Monday, November 25 at 1:00pm. We hope you will join us!
Candy Making
Monday evening, 11/25, is our last candy-making session. Join us for a night of fun. Our glass candy makes wonderful gifts for teachers, hairstylists, neighbors and co-workers.  Each bag, containing two cups of yumminess in ten flavors, is just $5.00. Please buy and sell some today.
Mountain Vision Christmas Party
Our Outreach Committee, the youth group and others will be traveling to Valley Head, WV on Friday, December 6 in preparation for a Christmas party there on Saturday, December 7. Some are grieving, lonely or feel hopeless. Recognizing that this is a reality for some in our community, on Sunday, December 1 at 4:00pm, we will have a Blue Christmas service. In A Nutshell | November 15, 2013

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
Yesterday I returned from the Fall Clergy Retreat in Sugarcreek. I appreciate your support as a congregation and your encouragement to recharge and renew my spirit in preparation for the Advent and Christmas seasons. I’m excited about joining the youth group this weekend in Columbus for Project 13:35, based on John 13:35, “All people will know you are my disciples if you love each other.”Please be in prayer for the six youth and three adults attending this conference that the speakers and music will challenge them on their journey of faith.
At Sunday’s worship, Pastor Jim’s message, “Will You Follow Along the Way?” is based on Mark 10: 46 – 52. Come for this inspiring message then stay for the fellowship luncheon afterwards. Please bring a dish to share and your table service.

Rent-a-Youth
The youth are offering their services to church members. The kids are willing to work hard raking leaves, doing housework, shoveling snow, etc. They hope this will be a great way to earn money for youth projects and serve the congregation as well.
