Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
This Sunday we will join with Christians around the globe celebrating World Communion Sunday. You are encouraged to dress in clothing that reflects your heritage or other countries you have visited. My sermon, based on 2 Timothy 1: 1 – 14, is titled “Fan the Flame.” All women are invited to join us after worship for our quarterly United Methodist Women’s meeting. Bring a sack lunch and a smile. Then come back in the afternoon for our second annual Blessing of the Animals at 3:00. We will gather under the oak tree, or in the event of rain, we’ll meet in the Narthex. Please make sure your pet is on a leash or in a pet carrier. All animals welcome.
Below you’ll find details about upcoming service opportunities and fellowship events for your consideration.
The BAZAAR is coming!!
The countdown begins! Our annual bazaar is just three weeks away. Saturday, October 26. Have you started your projects? Have you considered in which area you would like to work? It takes all of us working together to make this event a success. And of course, we need shoppers, too, so tell your friends, family and co-workers to come that day and stay for the best lunch in town! In preparation for this event, we will make mincemeat next Saturday, October 12 at 9am. Please see Miriam Zech or Elizabeth Feldman for more information. Candy making begins Monday October 14 at 6:15pm.
Church Women United World Community Day Brunch
This annual Church Women United Day will be held at Wooster UMC on Saturday, October 19. It will start with a brunch served at 9:30am. The program is titled “Is the Door Open to All?” Todd Swallen, the blind organist/pianist who entertains regularly at West View Manor, will furnish the music. Other guest speakers with disabilities are Gayl Cottrel and Andrea Ball. Tickets are $7.50. See Joanne Jolliff by October 14. Donations of paper products will be collected.
Glass Candy
In preparation for the Fall Bazaar, we will begin making glass candy on Monday October 14 at 6:15. We continue each Monday through November. A great group of volunteers come and cut the hot candy with scissors and we have a great time of fellowship. We welcome new cutters and training is free and easy. Hope to see you there!
Fellowship Luncheons
Our first Fellowship Luncheon of the season will be held after worship on Sunday, October 20. Oak Chapel has traditionally held these luncheons on the third Sunday of each month during Fall and Winter (October through March). Please join us in the Fellowship Hall after worship for some scrumptious food and fabulous fellowship. This is a great way to build and grow relationships with others in our community of faith. Bring a dish to share and your own table service.
Church-wide meetings
In preparation for our annual Church Conference on November 24, we will hold two church-wide meetings after worship on Sundays, October 20 and 27. At the first meeting on 10/20, the Finance Committee and Lay Leadership (Nominations) Committees will present the budget and leadership roster for 2014 and answer questions. The purpose of the meeting on 10/27 is to approve these items for our church conference.
Trunk or Treat
The Outreach Committee is very excited about our third annual Trunk or Treat, which will be held on Sunday, October 27 from 3:30 – 5:00pm in our parking lot. Decorate your trunk, dress up if you wish, and get ready to hand out candy to the children in our community. There will be snacks and cookie decorating, and a contest for the most creative trunk.
Community Service
Oak Chapel is seeking individuals who would be willing to volunteer one or two afternoons a week to make a Community Latchkey Program a reality for families in our area. The program would serve elementary students from neighboring school districts that have bus transportation in our immediate area. We would offer a safe place for elementary students to go after school until their parents get off work. The program would run daily from approximately 3:00-6:00 p.m. We would meet in Fellowship Hall, provide snacks, homework help and activities for the children. Please prayerfully consider if this is where God is calling you to be Christ’s hands, feet and heart. Contact Pam Domer at 330-601-3926 if interested.
Mark Your Calendars Now!
On Sunday, November 10, we will host a HymnFest in our sanctuary at 3:00pm. Oak Chapel UMC was selected by the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship to host this event and we are very excited about this opportunity. More information and details will be shared in future Nutshells, Acorns and bulletins.
