In A Nutshell | May 9, 2014

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
There is an old adage “many hands make light work,” and I believe that to be true. When we work together we can do so much more than any of us can do on our own. Next Saturday, May 17, Oak Chapel will join with other United Methodists around the world in the “Change the World” event. This event challenges us as Christians to step outside our church walls and get out into our community. The theme for this year’s event centers on hands. A hand is a powerful tool. When we use our hands, change can occur. As we prepare for this event, this Sunday I will preach the first of a two-part series on hands. My sermon, titled “Know Your Hand” is based on Romans 12: 1 – 8.

Ladies, don’t forget tomorrow is the All Daughters Brunch at 11:00am. It will be a lively event filled with laughter and fellowship. I hope to see you there.

Below you will find announcements and other important information about upcoming events. Please review and mark your calendars accordingly.

Nursery Helpers
Terra Aten is our nursery coordinator and works in the nursery each Sunday morning. Her assistant this Sunday is Evelyn Silver. Her assistant next Sunday (5/18) is Cathy Shallenberger.

Africa Update
Please come and hear the story of how God is working in the lives of the people in Liberia and how God and the people worked in the lives of the Africa mission team. With slides and stories, on May 18 during worship Elizabeth Feldman and Jean Brugger from Wooster UMC will talk about their mission in Harrisburg, working with St. John’s UMC. After worship we will offer an African lunch—modified of course. Please plan to stay for more fellowship.
Change the World
Next Saturday, May 17, Oak Chapel will join with other United Methodist churches around the globe in the fifth annual “Change the World” weekend. This day of service will challenge us to make a difference in our community and world. There will be service opportunities for people of all abilities including projects at the Wayne County Humane Society, cleaning up at Warner-Pioneer Cemetery and making layettes and health kits at Oak Chapel. We will start and end the day with some reflection time and lunch will be served. How many hands does it take to change the world? Yours!

Memorial Day Service
On Sunday, May 25, we will have our traditional Memorial Day service at the Warner-Pioneer cemetery at 9:30am. Many thanks to Arden Boyer who coordinates this service each year. Please join us as we honor those who have served our country.

Helping Hands Fund
The “Helping Hands” Fund supports our church’s outreach program, but is not part of the Outreach Committee’s responsibility. Therefore it is funded by designated donations only. The Pastor has discretionary use of these funds. Funds from this account are provided directly to a vendor/company to provide financial relief to those in our community needing assistance. At the present time this account is in need of funds if we are to continue our outreach to those in need. Please consider making a donation to this cause. Be sure to mark your envelope or check “Helping Hands Fund.”
Parking Lot Fund Update
To date, we have received $11,625 for our parking lot fund. The project will cost approximately $16,000. We appreciate your continued support.
