Just Because You Lose Doesn’t Mean You’re a Loser
Nobody likes to lose, but if you’re going to enter into a competition of any kind, you had better be prepared to finish second or lower. As the old saying goes, “You can’t win ‘em all.” But what happens when we lose? Does that mean we’re a loser? Of course not!
We only lose when we give up and refuse to try again. As we all know, there are plenty of ups and downs in life, so we need balance, being careful not to get too high after a victory or too low after a defeat.
Scripture provides helpful insight on this topic, particularly the well-known passage from Hebrews 12:1, which tells us not to worry about the outcome but instead focus on the process, advising us to “run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”
In other words, be resilient and keep our focus on the Lord. We have seen many athletes pray before, during, and after games. Some pray for victory, but others pray for the strength to perform to the best of their ability and let the result take care of itself. You don’t have to be an athlete to follow this advice. It relates to all phases of life. In I Corinthians 9:24-25 we are advised that in a race, all the runners run, but only one gets the prize, We do this “not to get a crown that will not last, but rather to get a crown that will last forever.”
In other words, we don’t compete for earthly accolades, but rather for me eternal acclaim. After all, Jesus doesn’t care who wins. He only cares that we finish. So in all things, let us remain faithful, for that is the ultimate triumph.
