In A Nutshell | January 15, 2016

Hello, Oak Chapel friends,
As winter has finally made its way to Ohio, I trust you are all staying warm. One way to do that is through fellowship with one another at church. We have an exciting Sunday planned and I hope you will join us. My sermon titled “Jesus: The Life of the Party” is based on John 2: 1 – 11. After worship we will have our monthly fellowship luncheon and our membership care committee will offer their monthly blood pressure screenings. For the luncheon this month, dessert will be provided. So please bring a main dish or side dish or two to share as well as your table service. I look forward to worshiping and sharing a meal with you.

Below you will find announcements and other important information about upcoming events. Please review and mark your calendars accordingly.

Children’s Sunday School Assistants
Terra Aten leads the young children’s Sunday School class that meets during worship each Sunday morning. Her assistant this Sunday, 1/17 is Joanne Jolliff.  Her assistant next Sunday, 1/24 is Cindy Mykrantz.
Chili Cook-Off
The United Methodist Men will hold their Annual Chili Cook-Off next Saturday, January 23 beginning at 5:00 p.m. If you would like to enter your chili, please see Kim Domer or Bill Braucher for an entry form. Everyone will have an opportunity to taste each entry and vote for their top three choices. The meal for the evening will be chili made by last year’s winner. This event always proves to be a great time of fellowship. Come, bring your friends and join the festivities.

Super Bowl Subs
Our United Methodist Youth Fellowship will once again be selling Super Bowl Subs. The cost is $5.50 per sub and orders must be placed by Sunday, January 31. The subs can be picked up after worship on Sunday, February 7. Order forms can be found in the Narthex of the church.

Winter Rally Day
Mark your calendars now for our Winter Rally Day on Sunday, February 21. Our worship service and fellowship luncheon will be centered on the theme “It’s Snow Fun!” You won’t want to miss it. Look for more details in the February Acorn and upcoming bulletins.

Women’s Day Apart
Recharge your energy, renew your spirit and ‘Laugh Out Loud’ with comedian and author Anita Renfroe during a day away for women on Saturday, March 12 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the John C. Myers Convocation Center at Ashland University. Renfroe is a comedian and musician who is bodacious in her faith and unashamedly real. She has appeared on Good Morning America and filmed a sitcom pilot, and she’s been featured in The New York Times, Readers Digest, Women’s Day and The Washington Post. The cost is $35 and includes lunch.  If enough interest is shown, Oak Chapel’s women will car pool and attend as a group. (Georgia Taylor says she is definitely going and would welcome company. Contact her for more information.)

Ash Wednesday Service
Begin the Lenten journey with Ash Wednesday worship on February 10 at 7:00 p.m. This traditional service will include the celebration of Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes.
Evening Lenten Worship Services
During Lent we will continue our annual tradition of Sunday evening worship with other United Methodists. This year, all five of the United Methodist Churches in Wooster will participate. The theme is “Finding Home” and offerings will go to Habitat for Humanity. Look for the schedule and other information in the February Acorn and upcoming bulletins.

Canal District Leadership Training
The annual Canal District Leadership Training Event will be Saturday, January 30 at Northampton United Methodist Church in Cuyahoga Falls. This year’s theme is “Church Vitality and Our Wesleyan Tradition.” The sessions will address leadership of various committees needed to equip the saints for the work of ministry. Anyone may attend. All church leaders should attend. Please see Pastor Robin for a brochure. The registration deadline is this Sunday, January 17.

ESL Sunday School Class
On Sunday, January 3 at 9:30 a.m. Georgia Taylor started an English as a Second Language (ESL) adult Sunday School class. She is using What Christians Believe and How Christians Grow by J. Wesley Eby. Both texts are written for ESL classes. Many students at the OARDC and residents in Wooster need help with conversational English. Discussion time will be a large part of each class.  When you see new people coming into the church, looking lost, please help them to find the ESL class in the library.
