In A Nutshell | September 19, 2014

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
We had a wonderful Rally Day service last Sunday with the Puppets of Grace! I heard many delightful comments from both children and those in their wisdom years. It was a great day with an entertaining message and delicious fellowship and lunch.

Did you know that there were 121 people there last week? Many commented on how good it felt to worship in a full sanctuary. While numbers are not our most important priority, one of the several indicators of church vitality is worship attendance. I have said on more than one occasion that it is my goal for Oak Chapel to have an average of 150 people in worship by the time the Bishop appoints me elsewhere. As you likely know, a few months ago, Georgia Taylor issued a challenge. She challenged us to have two Sundays in a row with 100 or more people in worship before she finishes her infamous prayer shawl. So … we had 121 people in church last week. Do you think we can have 100 this week? I think so! I am planning a science experiment for my children’s message. You won’t want to miss it! My sermon is titled “A Generous Boss” and is based on Matthew 20: 1- 16.

Let’s show Georgia that we can have 100 or more people in worship two Sundays in a row! The winner of the challenge gets to “pie” the other. Georgia better wear her rain gear this Sunday!

Below you will find announcements and other important information about upcoming events. Please review and mark your calendars accordingly.

Wipe Out Ebola
The United Methodist Church has been present with the people of West Africa since the beginning of the Ebola epidemic this spring. As the disease picks up speed, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is ramping up its response. The 3Cs Mission of the East Ohio Conference is partnering with Med Wish to send a container of supplies, gloves, masks, and gowns. We need financial commitments and prayers to make this happen. Take this opportunity to be the hands feet and heart of Jesus to people in West Africa. See more at
All are invited to a Camphor Partners meeting this Sunday, August 17 at 2:30 at Brecksville UMC to talk more about what is happening in Liberia, at Camphor Mission with UMVIM teams, solar energy project, and more.
Because there is no cure or vaccine for the Ebola virus, education is crucial in stopping the spread of the deadly outbreak. Learn the challenges facing families of Ebola victims and of the doctors and nurses fighting keep people healthy.  “We are women. We are strong. Don’t just sit there, do something.” This Liberian UMW chant is a rallying cry in the country. Liberian women played a major role in ending the country’s 14-year civil war and now hope to end the outbreak of Ebola. On Sunday, August 24 at 5:00 at Celebration UMC in Cleveland see Pray the Devil Back to Hell, the movie made about their efforts to stop Charles Taylor, Liberia’s former president, and learn what you can do to stop Ebola.

In A Nutshell | July 25, 2014

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,

The Epistle writer James tells us to “be doers of the word, and not hearers only” (1:22) and that “faith without works is dead” (2:26).  On Sunday morning twelve people from our compass group of local United Methodist Churches will travel to northern New Jersey on a mission trip to do restoration work with those affected by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012. Pam, Kim, and Katy Domer and I are excited to be a part of this team. Our theme for the week is “Putting Feet to Faith in New Jersey” and we are grateful for the support of the Oak Chapel congregation to help us do just that. We appreciate your prayers for our travel and those serving on our team – for health and safety and that God will provide opportunities for us to stretch and grow in our faith, as well as learn new skills. We also ask for prayers for those in New Jersey whom we will serve that they may see the light of Christ in the members of our team and feel hope for their futures.

This Sunday, Georgia Taylor will preach about “Hands” based on Matthew 9: 18 – 29. Please be in prayer for Georgia as she prepares and delivers her message, and support her and the ministry of the church through your presence on Sunday morning.

Below you will find announcements and other important information about upcoming events. Please review and mark your calendars accordingly.

In A Nutshell | July 18, 2014

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
We have had a wonderful week of Vacation Bible School at Oak Chapel UMC! Each evening new children have come to join the fun of learning about the nature of God. Many thanks to those who volunteered and provided resources to make this a successful week. On Sunday we will show a brief recap video so that those who did not have the privilege of participating will get a glimpse of this important ministry of our church.

This Sunday we continue our summer worship with the Heritage service at 8:30am in the Sanctuary and the Celebration service at 10:30am in Fellowship Hall. We are now in Week 4 of my sermon series “What’s the Least I Can Believe and Still Be a Christian?” My message, titled “Jesus’ Work: Where Is God?” is based on John 1: 1 – 14. I hope to see you Sunday!

Below you will find announcements and other important information about upcoming events. Please review and mark your calendars accordingly.

Nursery Helpers
This Sunday’s nursery assistant is Phyllis Weaver. The assistant next Sunday, 8/3 is Evelyn Silver.

In A Nutshell | July 11, 2014

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
What a beautiful day! The sun is shining, the corn is growing, the wind is softly blowing, and two squirrels are playfully running up and down the trees in the parsonage yard. On days like this I am reminded of the amazing beauty of Creation and I can’t help but ponder the nature of God as the Creator of the Universe. Next week, children of all ages in our church and community will have the opportunity to explore the nature of God as Creator, Provider, Protector, Savior and King. Our Vacation Bible School team has worked hard to create a meaningful experience for everyone. It is a joy to watch the children grow and learn. I hope you will join us next week beginning at 5:30 each evening with a light meal. The program starts at 6:00 p.m. and will end promptly by 8:30 p.m. While the children rotate through their stations (Bible story, crafts, music, service projects, recreation and snacks), the adults will study and discuss a related lesson … and we will even do crafts and snacks, too! VBS is a great week for our church and community. I trust you will be a part of it – through your prayers and your presence.

This Sunday we continue our summer worship with the Heritage service at 8:30am in the Sanctuary and the Celebration service at 10:30am in Fellowship Hall. We are now in Week 3 of my sermon series “What’s the Least I Can Believe and Still Be a Christian?” My message, titled “Jesus’ Grace: Am I Accepted?” is based on John 8: 1 – 11. I hope to see you Sunday!
