In A Nutshell | February 27, 2015

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
Thanks to all who prayed for me this week as I did my final interviews with the Board of Ordained Ministry. I am pleased to announce that I have been affirmed and recommended for Full Membership as an Ordained Elder in the East Ohio Conference. I am so very grateful for the love and support of the Oak Chapel congregation throughout this process. Ordination will be held at our Annual Conference at Lakeside on Tuesday, June 16 at 7:30 p.m.

This Sunday we continue our Lenten series “Giving It Up.” During worship we will celebrate Holy Communion and my sermon, “Giving Up Expectations” will be based on Genesis 12: 1 – 4a and John 3: 1 – 17. We will also have our monthly collection of pantry items for People to People Ministries.

In A Nutshell | February 6, 2015

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
The ministry of healing and wholeness is a primary task to which the church has been called as the Body of Christ.  Healing lies at the center of the church’s ministry. Just as Christ loved and ministered to the whole person, so, too, must the church care for people as physical and spiritual beings.  The mission of the church is to embody Christ, to be a continuation of the Incarnation, in ministries of teaching, preaching, and healing.  The church is Christ’s presence in the world, and we as the church, are charged with bringing healing to those around us.

Last Sunday we explored Jesus’ healing of the man with the unclean spirit, the first healing recorded in the Gospel of Mark. This Sunday we will hear about more of Jesus’ healings and those in the congregation will have the opportunity to come forward for prayers and anointing. My sermon, titled “Cured or Healed?” is based on Mark 1: 29 – 39. I hope to see you there!

In A Nutshell | January 30, 2015

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
While preparing for this Sunday’s worship which will focus on the start of Jesus’ ministry and his healing of the man with the unclean spirit as recorded in the Gospel of Mark, I was reminded of a Celtic blessing I learned in seminary. Its words and tune were written by John Bell of the Iona Community. This is my blessing and prayer for each of you today.
God to enfold you, Christ to uphold you,
Spirit to keep you in heaven’s sight;
So may God grace you, heal and embrace you,
Lead you through darkness into the light.

My sermon, titled “Broken and Needy,” is based on Mark 1: 21 – 28. We will also celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion. I hope to see you there!

In A Nutshell | January 23, 2015

Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens,
Praise the Lord, in the heights!
Praise the Lord from the earth,
Sea monsters and all deeps,
Fire and hail, snow and smoke,
Stormy wind fulfilling God’s command!
Mountains and all hills,
Fruit trees and all cedars!
Beasts and all cattle,
Creeping things and flying birds!
Praise the Lord!
~~ Psalm 148: 1, 7 – 10, 14b

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
As I look out the windows of the parsonage sunroom at the snow in the fields, I can’t help but think that all of nature – yes, even the snow! – praises God! Admittedly, winter is my least favorite season. I could do without the icky icestorms, shivery snow squalls, and numbing nights, yet newly fallen snow is restorative. It gives us a new lens through which to look at the world around us. Snow brings forth beauty from barrenness, divinely decorating the drab and dirty like a fresh coat of paint.  It reveals the wonder of creation, praising God. May this snowy season prompt you, too, to praise God!

This Sunday’s worship will focus on Jesus calling his disciples. My sermon, titled “Casting and Mending,” is based on Mark 1: 14 – 20. I hope to see you there!

In A Nutshell | January 9, 2015

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
I trust you are all staying warm on these frigidly cold days!

This week is Baptism of our Lord Sunday. My message “By Water and the Spirit” is based on Mark 1: 4 – 11. As we hear the story of Jesus’ baptism in the Jordon River, we can reflect on our own baptisms and God’s claim on each of our lives. This Sunday we will also have the added blessing of the baptism of Rob Jester, and Rob and Sue are going to join the church. The weather forecast indicates that the temperature should be a little warmer on Sunday. I hope you will join us for this meaningful service.

Happy New Year! My wish for each of you in this New Year is that you will experience the presence and love of God in new and unexpected ways.

So often in the new year we make resolutions to change, but these are often difficult to sustain. I recently read a post on a United Methodist leadership blog that offered an interesting perspective on this. It’s called “Four New Year’s Resolutions that Matter” and can be found at this link. http://umclead.com/new-years-resolutions/ I commend it to your reading.

Epiphany
Epiphany, also known as “Three Kings Day” and “Twelfth Day,” is a Christian holiday commemorated on January 6. It falls on the twelfth day after Christmas, and for some denominations signals the conclusion of the twelve days of the Christmas season. The word epiphany means “manifestation” or “revelation” and is commonly linked in Western Christianity with the visit of the wise men or Magi to the Christ child. We will celebrate this occasion with Communion on Sunday, January 4.
