In A Nutshell | December 19, 2014

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
Christmas is now less than a week away. Are you ready? Have you made the appropriate preparations to welcome Jesus Christ into your heart once again this Christmas?

We have many activities at Oak Chapel this weekend to help you get into the Christmas spirit and we hope you will join us for some or all of them. Tomorrow everyone is invited to go Christmas caroling to our homebound members and friends. This is a great way to both experience and share the joy of the season. Meet us in the church parking lot by 2:00 p.m. Our route will take us approximately three hours to complete.

On Sunday we will continue our “Under Wraps: The Gift We Never Expected” sermon series with a message titled “God Is Faithful” based on Isaiah 49: 13 – 18 and Matthew 1: 18 – 25. I look forward to worshiping with you for this Fourth Sunday of Advent service at 10:30 a.m. Then come back to the church in the afternoon for our annual Christmas program and cookie fellowship at 2:00 p.m. This year’s program titled “A Christmas to Believe In” will include students in our youth groups and some adults in the congregation. In A Nutshell | December 5, 2014

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
My goodness, how did it get to be December already?! Time surely flies! This season surely is a busy one. You can see evidence of that right here in this Nutshell. It’s so easy to get caught up in the preparations and the celebrations that we lose sight of the true meaning of this season – the Incarnation and God’s willingness to come and living among us; to be with us. God is with us! Take some time during this season to reflect on God’s presence in your life – in the “busy”ness and the quietness, God is always there.

I invite you to join us for worship this Sunday as we light our second Advent candle – the candle of peace. We will continue the “Unwrapped” Sermon series with this Sunday’s message titled, “God Is Dangerous,” based on Nahum 1: 3 – 5 and Matthew 2: 1 – 3. We will also celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion and pantry items for People to People.  I look forward to worshiping with you!

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
As our culture celebrates this season of thanks, it is important for us as Christians to offer our praise and thanksgiving to God. I invite you to do that in worship this Sunday as we celebrate Christ the King Sunday and World Thank Offering. My sermon is titled “An Audit of One’s Soul” based on Matthew 25: 31 – 46. Then stay after the service to help decorate our church for the Advent and Christmas seasons. A hot lunch will be served. It will be a great time of fellowship as we work together. The more, the merrier … AND the quicker the job will get done. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday at 10:30!

You’ll find out all about it in our exciting new Advent worship series, Under Wraps: The Gift We Never Expected. Each week we’ll explore God’s qualities and how they were fulfilled on Christmas day with the birth of Jesus. Join us this Advent as we unwrap God’s greatest gift, our Savior Jesus.  This series is a great opportunity for you to invite a friend or family member to come to church with you.

These are images that most of us celebrate and treasure, yet each year there are many who approach the holiday season with dread. Some are grieving, lonely or feel hopeless. Recognizing that this is a reality for some in our community, on Sunday, December 7, we will have a Blue Christmas service at 7:00 p.m. This more somber service acknowledges the pain and sadness many people experience as the holidays approach, but also encourages people to move toward hope.

In A Nutshell | October 31, 2014

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,
Fall is my favorite season for many reasons, one of which is Halloween. I enjoy watching the kids dress up. They’re so excited to be someone else. Some choose monsters. Others choose princesses. Some want to be dressed as someone courageous while others prefer silly disguises.

Do you ever feel like you are wearing a mask? Do you ever find yourself pretending to be something or someone you’re not? Pretending to “have it all together,” but in reality, your “all togethers” are falling apart? You would never want people to see the “real” you, the person behind the mask. You would be embarrassed if you were ever “found out.”

We humans look around and sometimes think we are the only ones who don’t have it together. And out of fear, we pretend that we are fine and hide behind our masks. We would never admit that we need help, let alone actually ask for it! But God sees through our masks right down to our real selves. God sees all our flaws and yet loves us completely and unconditionally. Psalm 139 tells us that God searches us and knows us. God knows us completely, from the inside out. God knows every thought, every worry, every joy, every hurt. There is no place we can run from God’s Spirit, no place to escape God’s love, no mask to hide our person from God. With God, we can stop pretending, take off our masks, and allow God’s love to infuse us.

This is my prayer for all of us at Oak Chapel UMC – that we can be our true selves and allow the love of God to infuse us.

This week is All Saints Sunday. We will remember those who have died in the last year and celebrate the communion of saints. My sermon, titled “Blessed,” is based on Matthew 5: 1 – 12.

Don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour on Saturday night. Enjoy the extra hour sleep and come to church refreshed and ready for worship at 10:30!

Below you will find announcements and other important information about upcoming events. Please review and mark your calendars accordingly.

Plain Township Sunday School Convention
The 137th Plain Township Sunday School Convention is this Sunday, November 2 at 7:00 at Oak Chapel. Entertainment will be provided by Gary Bonewitz playing guitar and singing. Refreshments will follow.

November Fellowship Dinner – Change of Date
Our District Superintendent, Ed Peterson, will worship with us on Sunday, November 9. So that members of our congregation may get to know him, we are changing our November Fellowship Dinner to that day. Please bring a dish or two to share and your table service, and enjoy a time of fellowship with our new DS after worship.

Clean Up Day The Trustees are hosting a church clean-up day next Saturday, November 8 from 9 a.m. till Noon. Many hands make light work. Please join us even if you can only come for an hour. God has entrusted us with beautiful facilities and we are to be good stewards in caring for our church property.

During this annual session we will do some important annual business of the church (approving budgets, salaries, leadership) and worship together as a compass group. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. Everyone is welcome and all church leaders are expected.

Candy Makers and Sales Force Needed
To make our time and effort count, we need YOU to sell our delicious Glass Candy to family, friends and co-workers. And of course it makes a wonderful gift for the mail carrier, teacher, and beautician. A bag (approx. 1 lb) sells for $5 which includes 10 flavors. We also take special orders for one flavor in a bag.  We’d love to have you join us on Monday evenings through November 24. We gather at 6:15 p.m. No experience necessary! We will provide training! Come enjoy the fellowship as we work together.
Mark Your Calendars Now … Church Decorating
On Sunday, November 23 we will decorate the sanctuary and other parts of the church for the Advent and Christmas seasons. Join us for a light lunch after worship and then stay to decorate. It will be a great time of festive fellowship.

Human Trafficking Program
On Sunday, November 16, our worship theme will be human trafficking. The women of the church who attended the human trafficking seminar in New York City will present music, scriptures, statistics and other information about this topic and will provide the congregation with concrete ways to get involved to abolish slavery today.

Advent Worship Series
Did you know that …
·         God Is Expectant
·         God Is Dangerous
·         God Is Jealous
·         God Is Faithful
You’ll find out all about it in our exciting new Advent worship series, Under Wraps: The Gift We Never Expected. Each week we’ll explore God’s qualities and how they were fulfilled on Christmas day with the birth of Jesus. Join us this Advent as we unwrap God’s greatest gift, our Savior Jesus.  This series is a great opportunity for you to invite a friend or family member to come to church with you.

In A Nutshell | October 3, 2014

Hello, Oak Chapel Friends,

I had a wonderful time on the UMW trip to New York City last weekend. Our seminar on human trafficking at the Church Center for the United Nations was both engaging and thought-provoking, and compelled us to action. This Sunday, the group will briefly share their experiences at the UMW Unit meeting after worship. Bring a sack lunch and join us for the meeting. The group will also share more extensively with the whole congregation on Sunday, November 16, presenting ways that we can take action right against human trafficking right here in our own community.

This Sunday is also World Communion Sunday, a day set aside to celebrate this sacrament with our sisters and brothers around the globe. Members are encouraged to dress in clothing that reflects your heritage or other countries you have visited as we celebrate the unity of Christ’s body in the four corners of the world. My sermon, “Pressing on to the Holy,” is based on Philippians 3: 4b – 14.

Below you will find announcements and other important information about upcoming events. Please review and mark your calendars accordingly.

Parking Lot Project is Complete!

The parking lot project is now complete and it looks beautiful!  Many thanks to all who helped to make this church dream a reality – including those who contributed to the fund, the Trustees, and especially Roger Burckhart for the countless hours of his own work preparing the lot as well as his research and work with our contractors.

Sunday Evening Bible Study on Luke

Pastor Robin’s Bible Study on Luke begins Sunday night at 6:30pm in Fellowship Hall. In this study we will explore the author’s purpose for writing this gospel and five distinctive themes found in Luke including: Good News to the Poor; Release and Restoration; Possessions and Wealth; Hospitality and Table Fellowship; and The Status of Women. The sessions will run from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

Candy Making

It’s that time of year! Preparations are being made for our annual candy-making season. Starting Monday, October 13 and every Monday thereafter throughout October and November, we will gather at 6:15 p.m. to make and cut our famous glass (hard-tack) candy. No experience necessary! We will provide training! Come enjoy the fellowship as we work together.

Church-wide meetings

In preparation for our annual Church Conference on November 9, we will hold two church-wide meetings after worship on Sundays, October 12 and 26. At the first meeting on 10/12, the Finance and Nominating Committees will present the budget and leadership roster for 2015 and answer questions.  The purpose of the meeting on 10/26 is to approve these items for our church conference.

It’s Mincemeat Time!

This year we will cook and can the tasty mixture on Saturday, October 18 beginning at 8:30 a.m. We need the most help at the beginning – chopping apples – so we can get the simmering started quickly. Miriam Zech is coordinating this project and will accept ALL help as well as donations of brown sugar, crushed pineapple, raisins and cash to purchase meat and cider.

Annual Bazaar

The Annual Bazaar will be Saturday, October 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Our success always depends on YOU! We need crafts, both decorative and useful, treats for the Kitchen Korner, and some Nice As New table offerings. We need some food prepared for the Luncheon and foods we sell – always a big hit. There will be snacks and cookie decorating, and a contest for the most creative trunk.

Fellowship Luncheons

Our first Fellowship Luncheon of the season will be held after worship on Sunday, October 19. Oak Chapel has traditionally held these luncheons on the third Sunday of each month during Fall and Winter (October through March). Please join us in the Fellowship Hall after worship for some scrumptious food and fabulous fellowship. This is a great way to build and grow relationships with others in our community of faith. Bring a dish to share and your own table service.
