In A Nutshell | September 5, 2013

Hello, Oak Chapel friends,
The Wayne County Fair starts tomorrow. Are you getting excited? I am! Many thanks to all who signed up to park cars. This is a great fundraiser for our church and also gives us visibility in the community. Don’t forget to wear your green church T-shirts. Even if you are not parking cars, wear your church T-shirt to the Fair anyway. What better way to let others know about our faith community.
On Sunday we will complete our “A Fresh Start” sermon series. My sermon, “Each Day a New Beginning,” is based on Lamentations 3: 22 – 25.  This will be our last Sunday with two worship services – Heritage at 8:30am in the Sanctuary and Celebration at 10:30am in Fellowship Hall.
This Sunday also concludes our combined adult study of Philip Yancey’s What’s So Amazing About Grace? with a lesson titled “Counterforce.” We will examine the ways in which God’s kingdom influence our world and reflect on how grace makes an impact. The lesson outline is attached for those wishing to review it before Sunday.
Rally Day
Saddle up your horses and join us for our Rally Round Up next Sunday, September 15 during 10:30am worship.  We will recognize our Sunday School teachers and Bible study leaders, as well as give Bibles to those students entering 3rd grade. Pastor Robin’s sermon, titled “I Know the Trail I Want You to Ride,” will be based on Jeremiah 29: 11 – 14. After worship we will gather for food, fellowship, fun and some good ol’ horsing around at Grossniklaus Lake (at the end of Cherry Lane). You won’t want to miss the festivities! Wear your Western gear and bring a friend!
Coming Soon! New Testament 101!
This class, led by Pastor Jim, will take an adult look at the New Testament so that the readers might be able to use the Bible as a spring-board for prayer. Beginning October 2 and continuing for the next six Wednesday evenings from 6:30 – 7:30pm, these sessions will examine various books of the Bible in detail. There will be assigned readings beginning with the second session. At the conclusion of the six weeks, the participants will have examined: an overview of the New Testament; several gospels in detail; a brief biography of Paul; and several letters of Paul in detail. Please indicate your interest in this class on the attendance slip in this Sunday’s bulletin.
World Communion Sunday
On Sunday, October 6, we will join Christians around the globe in World Communion Sunday.  Members are encouraged to dress is clothing that reflects your heritage or other countries you have visited as we celebrate the unity of Christ’s body in the four corners of the world.
Fall Worship schedule
We have enjoyed our Heritage and Celebration worship services this summer. We received a lot of positive feedback for both services. There is some interest in permanently adding an 8:30am service and that will be considered as we explore the possibility of adding multi-media capabilities and upgrading the sound system in the sanctuary. Next Sunday, September 15, we will return to one worship service at 10:30am in the Sanctuary.  We look forward to worshiping together again, lifting our voices as one in praise to God.
Adult Bible Studies
The adult Bible study groups will start meeting again the week of September 22. The Sunday evening group meets at 6:30 pm in the church library. This group will focus on knowing, loving and serving God. The Monday morning Bible study group meets at 10:15 am in the church library and will be participating in a comparative study of the Synoptic Gospels, Matthew, Mark and Luke.  New participants are always welcome.  For more information on either of these studies contact Pam Domer at 330.601.3926.
Blessing of the Animals
In recognition that God loves all of creation and that animals play an important role in our lives, we will have our second annual Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, October 6 at 3:00pm. We hold this event on the Sunday closest to October 4 – the Feast Day of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals. We will gather under the oak tree for a time of thanksgiving and prayer, then Pastor Robin will pray for and bless each person and animal present. Please make sure your pet is on a leash or in a pet carrier. If you cannot bring your animal, bring a picture. Last year we blessed dogs, cats and a turtle. All animals welcome! In the event of inclement weather, we will gather in the Narthex.
Mark Your Calendars Now!
On Sunday, November 10, we will host a HymnFest in our sanctuary at 3:00pm. Oak Chapel UMC was selected by the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship to host this event to introduce a new hymnal, Lift Up Your Hearts. Dr. Robin Knowles Wallace, Professor of Worship and Music at Methodist Theological School in Ohio, will lead a combined adult Sunday School class at 9:30am that day and will direct a “pick up” choir at the HymnFest that afternoon. We are very excited about this opportunity. More information and details will be shared in future Nutshells, Acorns and bulletins.

Hello, Oak Chapel friends,

School starts next week. Can you believe it? Where has the summer gone? There’s something about back-to-school that makes everyone feel the possibility of a fresh start. Getting new school supplies is fun and that new pencil box, markers, and notebooks give the feeling of starting with a clean slate. Back-to-school can ignite these feelings in adults as well – it’s almost like a mini-new year! Back-to-school season is also a time of refocus for the church, bringing people together to start new spiritual disciplines and open themselves to new ways for the Holy Spirit to flourish. This Sunday I will begin a new sermon series, “A Fresh Start.” My sermon, based on Psalm 145: 13 – 21 and John 8: 1 – 11, is titled “Backpack Blessings: Taking God with You.” We will also have a blessing of the backpacks. All students are encouraged to bring their backpacks for prayer and blessing. A new sermon series and the new school year are the perfect time to invite someone new to worship. Who will you bring to church this week?

I also encourage you to attend the combined adult summer Sunday School class in our air-conditioned Sing Mar Room at 9:30am. We have been studying Philip Yancey’s What’s So Amazing About Grace? This Sunday’s lesson, “Grace Abuse: Cheapening Grace and Robbing Its Power,” will explore the ways we abuse and misuse this precious gift God has given us. Prayerfully consider joining our discussion of this important topic.

Impromptu Fellowship Luncheon

We have leftover Johnny Marzetti from the Golden Agers Luncheon on Tuesday so we will have an impromptu fellowship luncheon after the 10:30 Celebration service this Sunday, August 18. Bring a side dish or dessert and your table service, and join us for some yummy food and conversation.

We will even sing a few Christmas carols! I am excited about both services and look forward to seeing you there.

In A Nutshell | July 19, 2013

Hello, Oak Chapel friends,
We had a great time at the Akron Aeros game on Tuesday night! Though it was quite hot and the Aeros lost, the fireworks were fantastic and everyone had fun. I am looking forward to more events like this. Special thanks to Bill Braucher and Rev. Jim Pfander for organizing the event.

This Sunday’s worship services will center on Luke 10: 38 – 42. I hope to offer some new insights on this familiar story of Mary and Martha in my message titled “Which One Will You Choose?” Join us early for the Heritage service at 8:30am or after Sunday School at the Celebration Service at 10:30am in Fellowship Hall.

I also encourage you to join us for the combined adult summer Sunday School class in our air-conditioned Sing Mar Room at 9:30am. We have been studying Philip Yancey’s What’s So Amazing About Grace? This week’s session, “An Unnatural Act,” focuses on forgiveness. In my preparation for Sunday, I have been challenged by this lesson and I anticipate fruitful discussion. Please consider adding your voice to the conversation.

Block Party
This Sunday, July 21 from 4:00 – 7:00pm, we will have a church block party on the parsonage lawn. This event is a closing celebration for our Vacation Bible School participants, but everyone is invited. There will be games, service projects, crafts and traditional block party fare. Invite your friends and neighbors and come join the fun! Bring a lawn chair and a smile. J

One day VBS with Mountain Vision
On Saturday, August 3, a group will travel to Jacobsburg, OH to do a one-day VBS with Mountain Vision. We will do activities with the children, feed them lunch and hand out school supplies. We’d love to have you join us! Please see Ann Kahrig for more information. You can also sign up on Sunday morning via the attendance slips in the bulletin.

Buy Way Sale
The Lincoln Buy Way Sale is August 8, 9 and 10. We will offer tables for $10 each to individuals to sell their own things, plus have a few tables from which proceeds will go to our Oak Chapel UMC Youth Fund. If you have items to donate to the youth table, please bring them Wednesday, 8/7. We need some helping hands that evening for set up, as well as cooking and serving hot dogs and other yummy food on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Please see Elizabeth Feldman for more information or you may sign up to help via the attendance slip in the bulletin this Sunday.

What Does It Mean to Be United Methodist?
Pastor Robin and Pam Domer will lead a one-day class on United Methodism on Saturday, August 24 from 9am – 2pm. This session will include a brief history of the church, our core beliefs, and helpful information about our church structure. Those interested in joining Oak Chapel UMC are especially invited to attend. And even if you have been a member of Oak Chapel or a United Methodist your whole life, this class will challenge you to live out our Wesleyan heritage. You won’t want to miss it! In A Nutshell | July 12, 2013

Hello, Oak Chapel friends,
Thanks to all who attended the fellowship luncheon and celebration of my commissioning last Sunday after worship. Your presence was meaningful and the plaque and monetary gift are very much appreciated. I’m grateful for the support of Oak Chapel UMC on my journey to ordained ministry!

Last Sunday was also the first day of our summer worship schedule. I was quite pleased with the turn-out and look forward to all that God has in store for us as we worship together this summer. This Sunday we will have a special treat at the Heritage service in the Sanctuary at 8:30am. Mark Ritchey is offering his musical gift and will accompany our hymns. Our Celebration service at 10:30am in Fellowship Hall will offer praise music and other multi-media. The sermon at both services, based on Luke 10: 25 – 37, is titled “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.”

Work/Clean-up Day at the Parsonage – TOMORROW!
During Wednesday’s storm one of the trees in the parsonage yard fell. Fortunately, there was no damage to the house. Some preliminary clean-up has been done, but the Trustees (and Pastor Robin!) would appreciate some additional help tomorrow. Specifically, we need to clean up more debris and haul away the wood that is cut. Join us tomorrow, Saturday, July 13, at 10am. Many hands make light work. With enough people, we should be able to get it all done in about an hour. Thanks for your consideration of this.

In A Nutshell | July 5, 2013

Hello, Oak Chapel friends,
I trust that each of you had a good Fourth of July, celebrating our nation’s birthday and the freedoms we have in our country. No matter what one’s nationality, though, true freedom is found in Jesus Christ and I pray that you are able to spend some time reflecting on that this weekend.

This Sunday begins our new Summer worship schedule. The Heritage Service, with traditional worship elements, is at 8:30am in the Sanctuary. The Celebration Service, using our multi-media system, is at 10:30am in our air-conditioned Fellowship Hall. I’m excited that I can now devote myself fully to Oak Chapel on Sunday mornings. I’m looking forward to both worship services and I trust that you will be a part of one (or maybe both!) of them this Sunday. I will also be leading the combined adult Sunday School class at 9:30. Come experience God in fresh and new ways at Oak Chapel UMC!
