In A Nutshell | October 30, 2015

Hello, Oak Chapel friends,

This Sunday we will conclude our four-week worship series titled Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity. During this series we have explored what the Bible teaches about financial management. This Sunday’s message titled “Defined by Generosity” is based on 1 Timothy 6: 17 – 19.  We will also celebrate All Saints, a day in the church year where we remember those who have gone before us. We will light candles for those members of the congregation and other loved ones who have died this year, and we will remember the “communion of saints” with whom we gather each time we partake in the Lord’s Supper. I trust you will join us on Sunday at 10:30 for this meaningful worship experience.

In A Nutshell | September 10, 2015

Hello, Oak Chapel friends,
Do you remember the childhood adage, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me?” I vividly remember chanting that on the school playground when some bully hollered nasty names and my friends and me. Sadly, it was a childhood lie we all repeated to try to protect ourselves, but in reality, words hurt. Deeply. Words have power to harm in ways that are not fully known when they so easily slide out of our mouths. Their wounds can last a lifetime. In the same way, though, words have the power to heal. To build up. To encourage. How do you use your words? This Sunday we will explore this question through my sermon “Sticks and Stones and the Power of Words,” based on James 3: 1 – 12. I hope you will join us for worship at 10:30.

Please note the change in time. We return to our fall/winter/spring worship schedule this week with Sunday School at 9:30 and Worship at 10:30.

In A Nutshell | September 4, 2015

Hello, Oak Chapel friends,
Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed with all that is going on in the world around us and even within our own selves? Grief, fear and worry can cause us to be in great turmoil. Emotional storms within us can be as hard – and perhaps even harder – to handle than external physical ones. To see us through the rough times in life, God provides us with protection and peace. Now that protection doesn’t mean that troubles won’t occur, but God’s presence is there with us. To fully realize that presence, however, we must admit our vulnerability and need for it. I invite you to come to worship this Sunday where we will examine this theme. My message titled “Vulnerability and Protection” is based on Ephesians 6: 10 – 20. We will also celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion together. I look forward to worshiping with you!

Hello, Oak Chapel friends,
Last Sunday in my sermon I encouraged everyone to make the most of their time, to be filled with the Spirit and to make melody in their hearts, based on Ephesians 5: 15 – 20. This Sunday you will have an opportunity to make melody in your hearts. Come to our Hymn Sing Sunday! In our survey of the congregation, there were 11 top hymns, all of which we will sing. There were also 8 hymns that tied for 12th place and we will sing a few of those as well. Mark Ritchey will provide special music. It’s definitely a Sunday you won’t want to miss! Come, and make melody in your hearts at 9:30, then stay to share joy and discipleship in Sunday School at 10:30.
